Legislative Overview
Unfortunately, each year legislative and regulatory proposals are up that would impose new mandates and costs on electric utilities. Often these proposals are promoted by special interest that hopes to benefit at the expense of consumers.
As governments assert more control over electric utilities, utilities and their customers must respond in multiple ways.
IREA consumers have benefited over the years from the Association's active involvement in state and national government legislation that would increase electric rates for its members.
Watch for the monthly consumer newsletter, Watts & Volts and the Legislative Alert page for information regarding these and other issues that could affect your electric rates. Look to this page for links to articles on issues affecting electric rates or service.
2011 was a very interesting year for legislation. With the split houses, Republican controlled House of Representatives and Democrat controlled Senate, things that would have driven up energy cost died in the Colorado House, while things that would have reduced or set aside previous legislative mandates died in the Senate.
This elected structure by the people of Colorado put a stop to most everything that would create higher out of pocket expenses for Colorado consumers, and the voters are to be congratulated for creating a legislative process for greater debate and sounder compromises.
